Assignments and Information for the week of 1/5/09

This week we will get re-acclimated to being back at Milwood and then continue with our exploration of Quadratic Relationships in Frogs, Fleas, and Painted Cubes. Our work prior to the holiday break gave us a basic understanding of what Quadratic relationships look like. As a final piece toward that goal we will look at the parabolic graphs to see what kind of information this tool can provide us. Our next goal is to take our basic understandings and build on them. To reach that goal we will examine situations and the patterns they produce.

The marking period will quickly come to an end, please keep that in mind as assignment due dates come and go.

Assignments and Information for the week of 3/17/08

Welcome to the 5th marking period!!!

This is a critical piece of the semester as we will revisit the important concept of Linearity. Linear relationships and functions are the foundation of Algebra, which is where you begin your high school math courses. Over the next three to four weeks our goal is to have every student be able to construct graphs, tables and equations for Linear relationships. Further every student will able to use one of these models to construct the others.

We begin with rates, more specifically constant rates. As we did the end of last marking period we will look at the given data and be able to determine other non-given data.

Please remember to submit all assignments timely to ensure the highest level of credit.

Assignments and Information for the week of 2/25/08

Fractions, Integers and Decimals...oh my!
We have worked hard over the past four weeks now it is time to see how well we did.
After spending a day talking about Zero (How we can get there, what it is and what it is not, and the concept of absolute value) which supports our Integer work, it will be test time. We will spend one last class period reviewing the main concepts we have encountered. I will provide a review sheet that you will be able to use during your test. We will work as a group to complete as much of the review as we can and the rest will be up to you to study prior to the test. You will have two days to complete the test. My hope is with the extra time everyone will have the best opportunity to be successful. So be sure to be in class for the test and review.
Congratulations to all of you who are seeing the value of being prepared for class. Meeting this expectation really helps get the most out of our class. Thank you.
Please remember to submit all assignments timely to ensure the highest level of credit.

2/25/08 No School - Mid-winter Break

2/26/08 Zero. The sum of a number and it's negative. Absolute value.
Homework: TBA

2/27/08 Test review
Remember you can use your notes, previous quizzes, classroom references and calculators (on parts) of your test. The only brain that will be available to you will be yours, so be sure you have all your questions answered (and written in notes, hopefully) and organized for the next two days.

2/28/08 Test(Day 1) - Fractions, Integers, Decimals, and Zero

2/29/08 Test(Day 2) - Fractions, Integers, Decimals, and Zero

I am looking forward to an amazing week.

Assignments and Information for the week of 2/18/08

While we have not quite been able to let our work on Fractions and Integers go this week, we will work around them and perhaps a different perspective will help to clear up the remaining confusions. So while we are converting fractions to decimals and back we have oppourtunites to improve our skills of reducing fractions. While we have decimals on our brains we will take a shopping trip. On our trip we will have the chance to add, subtract and muliply decimals as we take advantage of sales discounts and at the end pay the sales tax. We will then have a number day where we will talk about Zero. How we can get there, what it is and what it is not, as well as talking about absolute value. All of which helps to support our Integer work last week. Along with our Math work we will keep working at improving our note taking and organizational skills.
Congratulations to all of you who are seeing the value of the homework. Great Job!
Please remember to submit all assignments timely to ensure the highest level of credit.

Assignments and Information for the week of 2/11/08

Sorry that I did not give you and update last week. Lets chalk it up to the snow days and say we gave the blog a snow week too.
Last week we finished up our work on Fractions and took a quiz that we will complete the first day of this week. This week we will revisit Integers. Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, & Division will all be covered. While this may seem a real step back the goal of this week is to improve our sense of numbers, which will only help down the road with other concepts. As time allows we will expand our previous discussion of reducing fraction to talk about scaling and scale factors. Along with our Math work we will look at how notes are taken and used in class. These should be valuable tools for each of you, but if you do not know how to use them they have no worth. So we will look at wasy to get and keep your math folder organized.
Congratulations to all of you who are seeing the value of the homework. Great Job!
Please remember to submit all assignments timely to ensure the highest level of credit.

2/11/08 Finish Fractions Quiz

Assignment and Information for the Week of 1/7/08

Welcome Back Everyone.
The classroom will see some additions and subtractions as some schedule adjustments were made over the holiday break. Students in these classrooms for one reason or another have struggled with the Mathematics curriculum. The district Recovery program was developed to aid these students and help to prevent any further credits. This week we begin anew by discussing the expectations of all members in the classroom and discuss grading policies. Following the setting of class norms we will begin a two week skill improvement unit aimed at filling in some mathematical holes in our academic highways. This weeks we will stop and revisit Exponents, Order of Operations, Inverse operations, and Translating Words to Algebraic Expressions. Of course we may make some detours along the way to address some individual topics.
Getting off to a good start will develop study habits that will help everyone to be more successful. Remember to keep your binder organized. Think of it as your Math Brain, which if cluttered will not function well. Please submit all assignments timely to ensure the highest level of credit.
